I like wood. Since childhood I have worked in carpentry, but in recent years I put a lot of time in wood turning - creating vases, bowls and trays.
I have many acquaintances, and some of them keep me posted about trees that have fallen or have been cut down. Most of the trees I use in my work grew in Israel- Pine, Oak, Cypress, Date, Pecan, Indian Rosewood and Ficus. Sometimes I work with imported wood as Sapeli and Buckeye.
The way I acquire the wood is an integral part of the turning and creation process. Every piece of wood has its own story that merges with the artistic development to create a unique and one of a kind piece of wooden art.
While the wood is still soft and wet I turn it for the first time. In this process, I get to know the woods traits- growth rings, eyes, deformations, cracks, unique textures and hidden colors. Only after a few months, when the wood is dry, I go back to the piece. In my second turning session, which is sometimes the last, I take advantage of my knowledge of the wod to emphasize its qualities and hide imperfections. The bowls are meant to serve as decoration, display of fruit, salads, cheeses, pastries, etc. They are great as holiday gifts, wedding gifts or house warming gifts. With the right care they will last for tens of years.
With time, each piece will get its distinctive colors and scars that will make it a unique family asset and a subject of quarrels between inheritors… |
